Background of the Study
Traditional healing practices in Esan Central Local Government Area, Edo State, have long been integral to the community’s cultural and economic fabric. These practices, which include the use of indigenous medicinal herbs and ritual therapies, are not only a cornerstone of cultural identity but also represent a significant economic activity (Okoroafor, 2023). Traditional healers generate income through consultations, herbal product sales, and community health services, contributing to local economies especially in areas with limited access to modern healthcare (Agboola, 2024). Despite the growing influence of modern medicine, traditional healing remains prevalent due to its affordability, cultural acceptability, and perceived efficacy. However, challenges such as regulatory ambiguities, quality control issues, and competition from modern health services persist (Ighodaro, 2025). This study investigates the economic significance of traditional healing practices by assessing their contribution to household incomes and local commerce, while exploring the factors that influence their sustainability and integration with the formal healthcare sector.
Statement of the Problem
Traditional healing practices in Esan Central face multiple challenges that threaten their economic viability. The lack of formal regulatory frameworks and quality assurance mechanisms has led to inconsistent service standards and diminished public confidence (Adebayo, 2024). Moreover, competition from modern healthcare providers and changing socio-cultural attitudes further undermine the economic potential of traditional healing. These challenges result in reduced income for practitioners and limit the broader economic contributions of traditional medicine. This study aims to explore these issues, providing a comprehensive analysis of the economic challenges and opportunities within the traditional healing sector.
Objectives of the Study:
• To evaluate the economic contribution of traditional healing practices to local communities.
• To identify challenges affecting the sustainability of traditional healing.
• To propose policy recommendations to support and integrate traditional healing into broader health and economic frameworks.
Research Questions:
• What is the economic significance of traditional healing practices in Esan Central?
• What challenges limit the growth and sustainability of traditional healing?
• How can traditional healing be effectively integrated with formal healthcare systems?
Research Hypotheses:
• H1: Traditional healing practices significantly contribute to local economic activity.
• H2: Lack of regulation adversely affects the sustainability of traditional healing.
• H3: Integration with formal healthcare enhances the economic viability of traditional healing.
Significance of the Study
This study sheds light on the economic role of traditional healing practices in Esan Central, offering vital insights for cultural preservation and economic policy. Its findings will help in formulating strategies that promote quality standards and integration with formal healthcare, ultimately enhancing practitioners’ income and community well-being (Ibeh, 2023; Eze, 2025). The study supports sustainable cultural and economic development in the region.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating traditional healing practices and their economic impact in Esan Central Local Government Area, Edo State. It focuses solely on the economic and regulatory aspects of traditional healing, excluding broader healthcare system comparisons. Data are confined to local communities and documented practices.
Definitions of Terms:
• Traditional Healing: Indigenous medical practices based on local knowledge and cultural beliefs.
• Economic Significance: The measurable contribution of an activity to local income and commerce.
